DIY Group Costume How To: Hunting Trophies

DIY Group Costume How To: Hunting Trophies

The Sunday Times recently referred to our folding Zoofold masks as 'vegetarian taxidermy', which got us thinking about how to create a really easy Hunting Trophy group costume using our animal masks as a starting point.

This fantastic group costume idea is really quick to make in just four easy steps. I managed to make mine in under an hour using a few things I already had around the home as well as, of course, an animal mask or two.

You will need:

  • cardboard
  • craft knife
  • brown paint
  • paintbrush
  • a sheet of gold or silver card
  • permanent black pen

Step 1

Take a sheet of cardboard ( minimum 50cm x 50cm / 20" x 20" )

Using a pencil, draw a large shield shape on it, and draw a circle in the middle approx 14cm diameter.

Step 2

Using a sharp craft knife, cut out the shield shape and centre circle.

Use the knife to also cut a line between the neck hold and the top centre of the shape.

Then score two lines on either side of this line. You will use these to bend the sides of the opening in order to fit the shape onto your neck.

Step 3

Mix up some brown acrylic paint to a mahogany colour and paint your board.

For the best effect, use a few different shades of brown, or mix up some brown using lots of other colours to create a streaky woodgrain effect when you paint. You can also add some PVA glue to the mix to increase the shininess and better resemble a varnished plaque.

Then, using a lighter shade of brown, paint some detail around the edges, to suggest a thick, bevelled edge.

Step 4

Using some metallic card, gold would be best, but I went for silver as I already had some. Cut a small name plate to add to your taxidermy plaque and complete the look.

Then use a permanent pen to add some text. Although traditionally you might mark the date and location of the kill, seeing as no animals were harmed for the making of this costume I opted for : 'Red Fox, Vulpes Vulpes' as I was planning to use the Zoofold Fox mask to complete the costume.

Once the paint is dry attach your nameplate with double sided tape or glue, and then you are good to go.

Group Tips

You can use this easy costume technique to create fantastic group costume. I have used the three Woodland Zoofold animals to make a group costume for three, but for four people it would also work if you added the Ram's Skull mask.

Do you have more people in your group?

Why not dress someone up as the proud hunter - simply grab a tweed suit, flat cap or deer stalker, pipe and some green wellies.

How to Hang Your Zoofold

How to Hang Your Zoofold

Although you can just pin your Zoofold mask to the wall using a nail, there is a much better way to hang it that will show it to its full potential. It easily holds the mask in place without damaging it and won't cost you a penny! So you can simply lift it out if you want to show it to someone, or wear it to an event.

Follow this tutorial to learn the secret!

You will need:

  • some very thick card or board cut to 16x14cm  (the hard back of a drawing pad can work)
  • a craft knife
  • a metal ruler
  • a pencil

Follow these instructions for a quick and easy way to hang your mask:

Step 1:

Take the back of the Zoofold and trace it's shape onto the middle of the card.

Trace around the Zoofold mask

Step 2:
Using a craft knife, cut around three sides of the shape, leaving the bottom edge uncut.
Step 3:
Pin the card piece onto the wall (you could also use flat head nails).

Step 4:

Set the adjustable headband a little tight to help keep the Zoofold's shape.

Step 5:

To hang - slot the back of the mask onto the cut shape.

3 Fantastically Easy Halloween Costumes

Halloween is nearly upon us and we wanted to celebrate our brand new design, the Animal Skull, by suggesting three really quick and easy ways you can turn the mask into a complete costume. Read on for our tips.

The Suit

Halloween Costume Suit and Skull

How To

It is easy to make a fantastically sinister entrance by simply teaming the macabre monochrome animal skull with a well fitted black suit and tie and a crisp white shirt.  This is a Blues Brothers / Reservoir Dogs meets Halloween look of champions. If you already have a suit hanging in your closet? This it the best costume for maximum effect with minimum effort.

Mexican Skull Halloween Costume

How To

Here in the UK we are a long way away from Mexico, where they celebrate their dear departed family and friends on La Dias de los Muertos with the colour and vibrancy we can only dream of here. But embracing the Mexican aesthetic of colour + colour + more colour can be a super easy yet stylish way to create a memorable Halloween fancy dress costume.

To create a Day of the Dead look search out all of the colourful clothes, scarves and accessories you have in your closet and use them to create your own take on a traditional multi layered Mexican look. Then add flowers, lots of fake flowers.  If you happen to have a flower garland lying forgotten under your bed, left over from your last summer festival - you are in luck. Just crown your animal skull with a garland of flowers (remember to secure it with tape, string or wire).

What is a skull without the rest of the skeleton? It's really easy to complete the body (we have opted for a human skeleton, no one wants to have to walk around on their hands and knees). There are many printed bodysuits and jumpers available to buy online that will instantly transform your body into a skeleton.  But if you want to save your pennies, and the environment too (lets face it, you will only wear that skeleton bodysuit once) then you can make your own skeleton using paper.

Dig out some black leggings and a black hoodie, although if you have one, a turtle neck is best. Take 3-4 sheets of white paper, stack them up and draw some simple bone shapes.  Then cut them out and fix them to your outfit using safety pins. (Do not use sticky tape - I learnt that the hard way when my bones started dropping like flies).

So there you have it, three ridiculously easy ways to upgrade your Zoofold Animal Skull mask from ok, to darn right fabulous, without having to spend a thing. So bring on Halloween - we're more than ready for it!
